Though hailing from Flint, Michigan, Ashen Keilyn and her boys fit comfortably into the New York School of rough-edged, beautiful pop (Madder Rose, Lotion and Ivy spring to mind). No surprise, they've been living and playing there since 1990. A long time to keep a band together, and the experience shows. Tough, hazy and well-tempered, Scout is a delight to hear even when the material is not immediately gripping. Which is too often. Subtlety and restraint are virtues, and time spent with this tape will be rewarded, but it might do Scout some good not to mind its manners so much.
