Jonathan Geer's Essex is a rare and wonderful thing: an album of instrumental music, the composer of which neither insults my intelligence nor labors to prove how much smarter he is than me. Beneath placid waters, monsters await: unsettling numbers like "The Attack," "Dehydration," and "The Island" illustrate Geer's masterful use of tension and dissonance in contrast to beauty, expressed with deep emotion. The disturbing drones and glottal eruptions of "Casting Lots" brings to mind Scott Walker's The Drift — never thought I'd have the opportunity to compare anything to that masterwork! Marvelously unpredictable, Essex confounds expectations as it effortlessly ebbs and flows from serenity to terror and back. Seek this out, you will be glad you did.
