I detekt a distinkt Kinks influence on Quality Pie, especially "First Of May," with its driving guitars, retro organ and tossed-off vocals. The tune is Swell Mob's best moment on a six-song EP of jokey (a regrettably un-catchy) pop-rock songs about butlers, eskimos and housewives that arguably owes more to Blotto than the brothers Davies. This CD came packaged with a cherry snack pie which, thanks to my famously apathetic approach to reviewing stuff, remained undetected in the mailer for weeks, during which time it acquired a delectable growth of mold. May Swell Mob's career not suffer a similar fate.
