Breaking Bats For Jesus
Date received: April 27, 2005

Cezanne mastermind Johnny Daugherity now lives in Brooklyn and has formed a trio, but Breaking Bats For Jesus is a pure solo creation, recorded while Johnny was stuck in College Station. It's a lovely thing, filled with softly pulsing grooves, hazy, lazy guitar strumming, sleepy vocals and dulcet melodies. Daugherity's influences (Sonic Youth, Pavement, Nirvana and the Jesus and Mary Chain mostly) transport me back in time to the East Village around 1994 and that's just peachy. If Breaking Bats For Jesus has one flaw, it's that the recording lacks force, especially the drums, which should be more forward in the mix. I'll wager these songs kick ass live and that energy is absent here. If Cezanne the band can get that across on the next album they'll really have something.
