Hushed, tender twee-pop from a co-ed SoCal trio and their trusty drum machine. R.E.M. is a clear influence on Light Sleeper's folkie jangle and impressionistic lyrics ("Stars on the rail don't sparkle like/they used to"). Comparisons to Yo La Tengo, Small Factory, Galaxie 500, Carpenters and Belle and Sebastian are also well aimed. Some critics decry the record's lack of edge, but I don't believe Light Sleeper is after that. To my ears, this self-produced 4-track is a well-crafted, thoughtful and soothing accompaniment to rainy Sunday morning daydreams. Who needs edge?
