The Choir
Date received: March 26, 2002

Ampline has found a sure-fire way to avoid the trite lyrics and weak vocals that mar so many self-released recordings: they haven't got either. The Kentucky quartet's ironically titled debut instead offers an enjoyable set of rock instrumentals. Spinning around the intertwined guitars of Jeff Albers and Mike Montgomery and anchored by the dime-turning rhythm section of Kevin Schmidt (bass) and Rick McCarty (drums), The Choir sits somewhere between cerebral, post-Slint math-rock and straight-ahead, hard-rockin' emo. Although the lack of overwrought vocals makes the latter tag harder to apply, Ampline's song structures are fairly conventional; anyone out to amuse themselves by putting lyrics to these tunes would not find the task terribly difficult. It might even help.
