Straight outta Missoula, Montana comes Lettuce Prey, and before that unfortunate moniker sends you packing, give this lo-fi psych-popster a chance. "Sargasso Sea" is a terrific song, driven by nothing more than an uplifting melody and a badly recorded acoustic guitar. When I say "bad," by the way, I mean "good," and it's no jive. Blood From A Stoner Witch is one of the best-sounding bad recordings I've heard in ages. What in other hands would be unpleasant noise is here an integral part of the sound, like the excessive reverb on Led Zeppelin III or the speaker-cleaning squeals of the Jesus and Mary Chain. The freaky title track, acid-pastoral "Canyon Sunrise" and modestly epic "Much Bigger Than Me" (reminds me of The Cure, that one) are but a few of the fine tracks offered up for your enjoyment. And enjoy you will, if you just open your heart. Say hello to Lettuce Prey at #11 Creek Crossing Ct., Missoula, MT 59802. E-mail elevlev@mail.montana.com
