Compared to the cassettes Mach Five released before signing to Island, this four-song EP sounds a bit dispirited. Can't say I blame them; after clawing out of the NYC clubs to score a major deal, and grabbing a pair of drooling Billboard reviews, the Yankee Brit-poppers find themselves uncermoniously dumped, a victim of corporate bloat. The cranky but catchy title track could be a commentary on the experience, but it's a more global depression than that. "I'm locked out/You think I have a clue/Safe sex doesn't work/You pay less with a jerk/Except God/He holds your key to life/More cash for your church/Bless you, Taco Bell." The band's gift for melody remains intact, and the production (by Jeff Darien) is delightful, but I do hope Mach Five shakes off the malaise. Or learns to like it.
